I picked up a set of 10 wine red panda shrimp a little over 3 months ago. These are a super-attractive Caridina species with dark wine-red patches alternating with pure white patches. This is a showy shrimp that stands out against any type of aquarium background.

The pandas have done well but historically I haven’t been able to get caridinas of any flavour to breed successfully despite a lot of trying over the years. Happily since I started deliberately removing copper from the water about five weeks ago, this has really turned around, first with a good-sized batch of wine red panda x tangerine tiger crosses, and now a few weeks later with what looks like straight-up wine red panda progeny.

I’ve been trying mostly without success to photograph this guy for the last several days. Mostly he/she stay hidden down in the rocks where they can’t be seen. I suppose if I were a baby shrimp and didn’t need to leave the protection of the rocks I would just stays hidden all the time as well. I was thinking some food could tempt them out, but too soon for that (although the more grown shrimp sure love the food).

I picked the wine red pandas up from Shrimp Corner. Always super great service and they included a free shrimp keyring. When I ordered the tangerine tiger shrimp with them previously I got a tangerine tiger keyring (I didn’t realise this is what it represented at the time) and now with the wine red panda a wine red panda keyring. So cute! These people really love their shrimp!
